The National Association of REALTORS® - NAR

What is the difference between a REALTOR® and a Real Estate Agent? When individuals think of the term REALTOR®, many automatically think it is the same thing as a real estate agent, but this is not the case, and not all real estate agents are REALTORS®. Although both real estate agents and REALTORS® are licensed to sell real estate, a REALTOR® is a member of The National Association of REALTORS®, also known as the NAR.

REALTORS® are involved in many different aspects of the commercial and residential real estate world and may act as:

Founded in 1908, the National Association of REALTORS® currently has over one million licensed REALTORS® in North America. REALTORS® also perform many of the same duties that a traditional real estate agent does, such as listing properties and helping potential buyers find what they're looking for. Another difference between real estate agents and REALTORS® is that REALTORS® are required to follow the strictly enforced Code of Ethics. But what does this mean exactly?

The Code of Ethics contains 17 different articles that all REALTORS® are required to follow. These rules and regulations are strictly enforced to ensure that all REALTORS® have their client's best interests in mind. However, this does not mean that REALTORS® are necessarily more qualified than real estate agents who are not REALTORS®, this all depends on the individual. While some may have had more success with a REALTOR® than a traditional real estate agent, others may have had more success with a traditional real estate agent as opposed to a REALTOR®.
