City of Durham Receives Grant for Efforts to Provide Affordable Housing
Durham, N.C. – Thanks to a $5,000 grant from the National Association of REALTORS® and the U.S. Conference of Mayors, the City of Durham will be able to further strengthen its programs helping low-income families achieve the American dream of homeownership.
The Durham Regional Association of REALTORS, in conjunction with the City’s Department of Community Development, will receive the “Ambassadors for Cities” award at a ceremony scheduled for Thursday, May 24, 2007, at 12 p.m. at the Hope Valley Country Club, located at 3803 Dover Road, Durham. The event will also recognize the department’s efforts to provide affordable housing for 616 Durham families since 1991.
According to Mike Barros, director of the City’s Department of Community Development, the grant recognizes the collaboration between the City and the Durham Regional Association of REALTORS in expanding housing opportunities in Durham. “Since 1997, our organizations have worked together to provide families the opportunity to become first-time homebuyers,” Barros said. “In fact, our collective efforts have opened the door for more than 600 families to experience homeownership. The awarding of this grant is going to help us continue to offer new and innovative approaches to introducing housing options for our community’s low-income families.”
Some of the events the City and the Durham Regional Association of REALTORS have partnered on include realtor training programs. In addition, most of the 616 loan closings were assisted by the Durham Regional Association of Realtors. Since 1994, these two organizations have also partnered during the Durham Regional Association of Realtors Annual Homebuyer’s Fair as well as on the grand opening for the Eastway Village Housing Development in June 2006.
